Hi Ruby! Tell us a bit about who you are, what you do, and where you live?
My name’s Ruby Holland. I’m a mum of two, living on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Life’s a bit of a juggling act—in the best way. I am currently on maternity leave, but outside of that, I work as an Account Manager at a creative agency in Burleigh Heads, I freelance as a photographer, and I also create content for brands. Every day looks a little different, which I love.
What’s inspiring you creatively at the moment?
Honestly, I’ve been in a bit of a creative rut lately. Someone recently reminded me that it’s totally normal to go through waves of getting tired of your own work, then reinventing yourself. That’s kind of where I’m at.
I’ve just had my second baby, Remy, and I’ve been deep in that beautiful, hazy newborn bubble. But I’m slowly emerging, and have a few projects I am starting to work on. I’ve always been really drawn to and inspired by print—old and new editorials. I’m also heading into the darkroom again soon to hand-print photos for the first time since high school, and that process always brings a fresh spark for me.
Do you have a go-to outfit formula or a 'uniform'?
I’m a jeans and a crisp shirt girl through and through. If you know me, you know I love a shirt! I love that you can dress that kind of outfit up or down so easily depending on what the day throws at you.
What do you love most about being a photographer?
Two things, really. First, the people. Photography has introduced me to so many interesting, creative, and inspiring humans—those connections are a big part of why I do what I do.
Second, the process of shooting film. There’s something really special about the lack of instant gratification—you have to wait and trust your eye. It slows things down in the best way, and in a world of instant everything, that feels pretty grounding.
Favourite Commonplace AW25 pieces?
I’m obsessed with the Knoll knit in grey—it’s such a beautiful, wearable piece, especially paired with the Ease white tee. And of course, the Ease shirt in white. Like I said, I’m a shirt girl through and through. It’s a total staple, and the detailing gives it a little extra something. Super versatile.
